My small hospital closet held a few of Malcolm’s things that Sophie had insisted I have. A soft, worn hoodie he loved, a framed photo of us laughing at the beach, and his heavy winter coat. It was a dark, charcoal wool, a classic piece he’d bought years ago and rarely wore in Atlanta’s milder winters. He had worn it to Sophie’s Christmas pageant last year, I remembered, laughing as she sang slightly off-key.

A sudden, fierce urge to connect with him, to feel something familiar, overwhelmed me. I reached for the coat, pulling it off its hanger. The heavy fabric felt cool beneath my fingers. I buried my face in it, inhaling deeply, searching for his scent.

The faint aroma of his cologne, woodsy and masculine, still clung to the lining. A fresh wave of grief hit me, sharp and sudden. I clutched the coat tighter, my knuckles white.

As I held it, my fingers brushed against something hard and crinkly sewn into the inner lining near the left pocket. It wasn’t just a loose thread. There was a small, intentional seam, almost invisible. Curiosity, a rare visitor these days, pricked at me.

I picked at the stitching, careful not to tear the fabric. Slowly, a corner of what felt like paper emerged. I tugged gently, and a folded, aged envelope slid free.

It was addressed to me, in Malcolm’s familiar, elegant handwriting. My name, “Emily,” scrolled across the front. The date stamped on the corner was November 12, 2019. This was old.

My heart began to pound, a frantic drum against my ribs. What could this be? Why was it hidden?

My hands trembled as I carefully opened the brittle paper. The letter inside was also in Malcolm’s hand.

*My Dearest Emily,* it began.

*If you’re reading this, it means I’ve found a secure way to share something crucial, something I never wanted to burden you with unless absolutely necessary. Remember that financial consultant I almost hired years ago, the one from that firm downtown? Derrick Gaines.*

I gasped, a small, choked sound. Derrick Gaines. The name leaped off the page, cold and sickening.

*He’s a snake, Em. A charlatan.*

Malcolm’s words continued, clear and concise, despite the passage of time.

*Back in early 2019, he tried to strong-arm me into investing in a shell company, claiming it was a surefire bet. When I looked into it, his ‘company’ was a ghost. He tried to embezzle funds from my old business account, forging signatures, attempting to divert cash into his personal, undeclared accounts.*

My blood ran cold. This wasn’t just a stranger. This was a man Malcolm knew, a man who had tried to steal from us before.

*I caught him. Exposed his fraudulent scheme to his superiors. They fired him, of course, but he managed to evade criminal charges by claiming it was ‘miscommunication.’ I made sure he was legally banned from any of my accounts, my firm, and any future financial dealings. I got a restraining order against him contacting me or my family. It’s on file with my attorney, Michael Green.*

A wave of dizzying shock washed over me. Derrick wasn’t some opportunistic, random predator who latched onto Brenda at the funeral. He was a long-standing threat, a ghost from Malcolm’s past. Malcolm had *known* him, had been wary enough to hide this letter, to legally ban him.

My eyes scanned the last lines of the letter, Malcolm’s love for me and Sophie radiating from the page.

*I pray you never need this, but if he ever resurfaces, if he ever tries to involve himself in our lives again, this letter is your proof. Protect Sophie, my love. Always.*

My hands crumpled the letter slightly, then I smoothed it out. This was it. This was the weapon, the shield I needed. Not only was Derrick lying, he was an old enemy, a known fraudster, whose very presence around my family was a violation of a legal order.
