While In The Hospital Grieving My Husband, A Stranger Tried To Declare Me Incompetent To Seize My Daughter — Until An Old Letter Uncovered His Secret
The clatter of trays and low hum of conversation in the hospital cafeteria did little to mask the tension radiating from the corner booth. I watched Brenda, my mother-in-law, from the doorway, her shoulders hunched. Derrick Gaines sat across from her, leaning in conspiratorially. A half-eaten sandwich lay forgotten on Brenda’s plate.
I was supposed to be resting, but Nurse Tasha had suggested a short walk for “mental well-being.” Now, I wished I had stayed in my room.
Derrick’s voice carried, sharper than the general din. “She’s planning to leave, Brenda. As soon as she’s out of here, she’ll pack up Sophie and disappear.”
Brenda’s head snapped up, her eyes wide. “What? Leave Atlanta?”
Derrick nodded slowly, a picture of false sincerity. “That’s what I’ve heard. Move to another state, cut all ties. You won’t see Sophie again.”
A cold knot formed in my stomach. He was twisting everything, using Brenda’s grief against her, just as Sophie had warned. He knew how much Brenda adored her granddaughter, even if her love for me was long gone.
Brenda’s face crumpled. “She wouldn’t dare.” Her voice trembled, cracking with emotion.
“She would,” Derrick insisted, his voice dropping to a persuasive murmur. “That trust fund, Malcolm’s legacy… she wants it all to herself. And Sophie with it.”
He pushed a folder across the table. “This affidavit will help prevent that. It just states your concerns about her emotional state, confirms she’s been difficult, unstable.”
Brenda picked up the pen, her hand shaking. I remembered Malcolm telling me once that his mother had always been fiercely protective, easily swayed by perceived threats to her family.
“She blames me,” Brenda whispered, tears welling in her eyes. “For Malcolm… she blames me.”
Derrick nodded, his expression grim. “Of course she does. She’s looking for someone to punish. Don’t let it be Sophie.”
He slid the pen into her hand. Brenda hesitated for a long moment, her gaze fixed on the document. I could almost see her pain, her resentment, solidifying into a terrible resolve.
Then, with a jerky motion, she signed her name.
A wave of nausea washed over me. I pressed my hand against the wall to steady myself. The betrayal felt like a fresh wound, layered on top of the gaping one Malcolm had left.
Later that afternoon, a stern-faced private security guard appeared on my floor. He stationed himself by the elevator, arms crossed, watching everyone. Nurse Tasha, her lips a thin line, informed me that Brenda’s signed affidavit had officially been filed, and Derrick had leveraged it to request a “limited visitation restriction.”
“He tried to get Dr. Crawford banned,” she whispered, her voice tight with anger. “But Dr. Crawford is your attending physician. We won’t allow that.”
The guard, however, was clearly a barrier meant to keep out anyone Derrick deemed an ‘unauthorized visitor’. Including, I realized with a fresh pang, any potential allies. I was more isolated than ever, trapped in my room, now with an actual guard enforcing Derrick’s control.
