Chapter 9: The Staged Trap

#content-1

The morning of Victoria’s live broadcast dawned with a cold, clear sky, but a storm raged inside our home. Nora’s stolen memo photos, now downloaded and magnified on Maya’s screen, were a blueprint of Victoria’s evil.

“She planned everything,” Sienna whispered, tracing Victoria’s signature on the screen. “Every lie, every attack.”

Chloe, usually the most hesitant, was now resolute. “She’s not just a bad mother, Grandpa. She’s a criminal.”

“We can’t let her get away with this,” Maya said, her eyes flashing. “Not with her fifteen million.”

I felt a surge of pride in my granddaughters. They were no longer the confused, hurt girls from just days ago. They were fierce, intelligent women ready to fight.

My phone buzzed. It was Nora. “Victoria is on her way. The crew is setting up. She’s dressed in white. Going for ‘angelic victim’ chic.”

“We’re ready,” I texted back.

Minutes later, the noise outside swelled. The rumble of generators, the chatter of crew, the excited voices of reporters. Then, Victoria’s polished, modulated voice cut through the air.

“My daughters,” she announced to the cameras, “I’m finally here to reclaim what was stolen from me.”

She pounded on our front door. Instead of my usual resistance, Chloe, Maya, and Sienna stepped forward.

“Let’s invite her in,” Chloe said, her voice surprisingly steady. “On camera.”

I stared at them, a question in my eyes. This was Twist 10, Layer 1: the girls had a plan.

With a deep breath, I opened the door. Victoria, looking ethereal in a flowing white dress, gasped dramatically for the cameras. Her eyes were already welling up, a single tear beginning its perfectly timed descent.

“My darlings!” she cried, rushing forward, her arms outstretched. She embraced them, pulling them into a tight, staged hug for the camera lens. Her whispered words to the girls, though, were chillingly different. “Just play along. Remember the deal.”

The girls exchanged a quick, almost imperceptible glance. The cameras zoomed in. Victoria began to weep, dabbing her eyes with a delicate lace handkerchief.

“My precious angels,” she sobbed, holding up three small, velvet jewelry boxes. “I’ve brought you these. A small token of my love, for all the years we’ve lost.”

She tried to hand Chloe a diamond pendant. “And, my sweet Chloe, I know how much you wanted to go to medical school. I’m prepared to offer you one hundred thousand dollars, tax-free, for your silence about… the past.”

Chloe calmly, deliberately, shifted her position slightly. The movement revealed a tiny, almost invisible microphone clipped to the lapel of her sweater. It was recording everything. Twist 10, Layer 3.

“One hundred thousand dollars each,” Victoria continued, her voice now a low, urgent whisper, meant only for them. “If you tell the cameras you were never kidnapped, and that your grandfather manipulated you. I have a prepared script for you.”

Just then, the front door burst open. Two County Sheriff Detectives, led by Detective Marcus Vance, stepped into the living room, their faces grim. With them was Assistant District Attorney Owens.

“Freeze the camera!” Detective Vance commanded, his voice cutting through the stunned silence. “Everyone step away from the subjects.”

Victoria froze, her smile melting into a mask of pure disbelief. This was Twist 10, Layer 2.

“Victoria Pendelton, a.k.a. Victoria Delacroix,” Assistant DA Owens announced, stepping forward. “We have warrants for your arrest for filing false police reports, perjury, and felony extortion.”

My granddaughters stepped away from Victoria, their faces stoic. I walked forward, holding two thick files. One was the certified 2004 hospital toxicology record, the other, Nora’s printed photos of Victoria’s signed PR strategy confession. I handed them to the Assistant DA.

“And we have the evidence,” I stated, my voice ringing clear for all the live cameras that were now, finally, capturing the truth.
