My Surgeon Husband Demanded a Divorce for His Pregnant Fellow at the Hospital Gala — Until I Discovered My Family Secretly Owns 85% of His Medical Empire
Inside the administrative observation room, the air was heavy with the hushed drone of Mark’s voice. He stood at the head of the boardroom table, a stack of papers in his hand, his back to the observation room’s one-way glass. His voice, slightly muffled by the soundproofing, carried a tone of confident authority.
“…and therefore, due to longstanding financial mismanagement and recent erratic behavior, I move to formally remove Arthur Harrington and Julia Harrington from all official hospital records, and to nullify any perceived voting shares…”
He was pressing the attack, trying to erase Arthur and me from the hospital’s history. He still believed he was in control, that his family’s fabricated narrative would prevail.
I took a deep breath, my fingers tightening on my briefcase. This was my moment. I reached for my phone, ready to send the signal to Gavin. But before I could, a strange ripple went through the boardroom.
A low, collective hum started to spread among the board members. One by one, their hands drifted to their pockets, pulling out their smartphones. The room, usually a picture of focused attention, began to buzz with a new, unsettling energy.
The first phone vibrated loudly on the polished mahogany table, followed by another, and then another. A symphony of digital notifications. The board members’ faces, previously intent on Mark’s speech, now shifted, their eyes glued to their screens.
Mark, oblivious, continued to speak, his voice unwavering. “…this motion ensures the stability and future viability of St. Jude Surgical Center, protecting us from external influences and… uh…”
He trailed off, his gaze caught by the sudden, dramatic shift in the room’s atmosphere. He saw the frantic tapping on screens, the widened eyes, the stunned silence that had replaced the low hum of notification.
Suddenly, Dr. Eleanor Vance, a senior board member and head of the ethics committee, gasped loudly. Her phone clattered to the table, her face a mask of horror.
“Mark,” she whispered, her voice barely audible through the glass, but the tremor in it was clear. “What… what is this?”
Another board member, old Mr. Davies, let out a choked sound, his hand reaching for his chest. His screen glowed with a headline I couldn’t quite read from my vantage point, but the bold, red font screamed urgency.
Then, a wave of stunned gasps and frantic whispers swept through the room. Mark watched, his eyes darting from face to face, confusion slowly giving way to a dawning horror.
His own phone, lying face down on the table, vibrated furiously.
He picked it up, his brow furrowed, and looked at the screen. The color drained from his face, leaving him ashen. His lips parted, but no sound came out.
Gavin Ross had published his explosive investigative report.
The screen of Dr. Vance’s phone, visible through the glass, displayed a massive, bold headline: “ST. JUDE SURGICAL CENTER IMPLICATED IN $4.2 MILLION INSURANCE FRAUD SCHEME – SENIOR ADJUSTER LYLE SIMMS IDENTIFIED.”
Beneath it, in smaller but equally damning text, were mentions of “phantom surgical equipment billing” and “offshore shell companies linked to Dr. Mark Harrington.”
My breath caught. Gavin had done it. He hadn’t just published; he had tagged every member of the board. The news had broken simultaneously, directly into their hands.
The board members looked up from their phones, their gazes converging on Mark. The expressions on their faces ranged from disbelief to outright fury. Their previous concerns about my “erratic behavior” vanished, replaced by a cold, hard assessment of Mark’s monumental betrayal.
Mark stood frozen, his face a ghastly shade of white, the papers in his hand fluttering slightly. The motion he had been reading, his attempt to seize control, now seemed pathetic, a flimsy curtain ripped away to reveal the rot behind it.
Suddenly, a loud, piercing alarm blared from the large digital stock ticker mounted on the boardroom wall. The numbers, usually a calm green, flashed a stark, alarming red.
The stock price of Harrington Health Holdings plummeted.
35%.
In three minutes.
The board members stared at the screen in horrified silence. The carefully constructed façade of St. Jude, the prestige, the reputation, was crumbling before their very eyes, taking their investments and their hospital’s future down with it. Mark had just publicly declared a divorce from me, but in a matter of minutes, he had divorced the hospital from its very foundation.
