My Surgeon Husband Demanded a Divorce for His Pregnant Fellow at the Hospital Gala — Until I Discovered My Family Secretly Owns 85% of His Medical Empire
The emergency legal conference dissolved into chaos, with Richard sputtering threats and Mark looking utterly defeated. I left the administrative suite, leaving them to sort through the wreckage of their failed ploy. My phone buzzed again – a new text from Gavin: “Exposé almost ready. Waiting for your signal.”
I walked through the sterile corridors, the scent of antiseptic strong in the air. As I passed the surgical prep room, the door swung open, and Chloe Bennett emerged, dressed in her surgical scrubs, a forced smile on her face. She spotted me immediately.
“Well, well,” she said, her voice sugary sweet, but with an edge of triumph. “If it isn’t the former Mrs. Harrington.”
She sauntered toward me, her hand resting protectively on her still-flat stomach. “I hear your little stunt with the fake prenup didn’t quite work out. Shame.”
I stopped, turning to face her. Her smugness was almost unbearable. She truly believed she had won.
“Actually, Chloe,” I replied, my voice calm. “Richard’s forgery just proved how desperate they are. It changes nothing about my claim.”
Chloe scoffed, tossing her head. “Oh, please. Mark said your father put in some seed money years ago. Peanuts. You’ll be bought out. He’s already promised me the Associate Chief of Surgery position once this divorce is finalized. And once our baby is born, he’s buying us a private boutique clinic in Suburban Square.”
Her eyes sparkled with ambition, completely oblivious to the impending disaster. She envisioned a future built on stolen foundations.
“A private clinic in Suburban Square?” I asked, a slight smile playing on my lips. “That’s quite a dream, Chloe. A shame it’s built on quicksand.”
Her smile faltered slightly. “What are you talking about?”
“That clinic, the one Mark promised you,” I continued, my voice low and even. “It was recently used as collateral for a defaulted underworld loan. A fourteen-million-dollar loan, to be precise. To Vincent Moretti.”
Chloe’s eyes widened, her jaw dropping slightly. Her hand instinctively tightened over her stomach. The forced composure she usually maintained around me evaporated. The words “underworld loan” seemed to echo in the quiet hallway.
“That’s… that’s a lie,” she stammered, but her voice lacked conviction. She was searching my face, trying to discern if I was bluffing. The specific number, the specific location, the specific name, all hit their mark.
“Is it?” I countered. “Mark hasn’t exactly been forthcoming with you about his… financial entanglements, has he? He’s been using hospital assets to back his personal failures, and now those failures have caught up to him. And to anyone associated with him.”
Her face was a mask of confusion and growing fear. The bubble of her idyllic future, meticulously constructed by Mark’s lies, had just been pricked.
“I… I don’t believe you,” she said, but her eyes darted away, betraying her. She looked shaken, truly unsettled.
“Don’t take my word for it,” I said, shrugging. “Go ask him. Demand to see the property title for this phantom clinic. Demand to see the loan documents. See how he reacts.”
I watched her for another moment, letting the implications sink in. Her ambition, her entitlement, suddenly looked very fragile. She had been so sure of her power over me, of her future with Mark. Now, doubt was creeping in.
I walked past her, leaving her standing there, a statue of growing alarm in the middle of the hallway. I knew exactly where she would go.
Less than five minutes later, as I was heading to the patient lounge, I heard it. A muffled shout, then a loud thud, followed by Mark’s enraged voice booming from his private office down the hall.
“You stay in your place, Chloe! You don’t question me! Never!”
The sound of something shattering against a wall followed, a violent punctuation to his fury. He was reacting exactly as I predicted. Chloe’s doubt had turned into confrontation, and Mark, cornered, was lashing out. The first cracks in their united front had appeared.
