Chapter 18: The Next Morning

I looked Mark dead in the eye, the original 2018 covenant document held firm in my hand. His face was ashen, his defiance completely shattered. He had nothing left to say, nothing left to hide behind. The room, filled with board members, Claire Dubois, and Moretti’s silent enforcers, waited with bated breath.

“As the controlling shareholder of Harrington Health Holdings,” I began, my voice clear and authoritative, “I am now moving to formally terminate Dr. Mark Harrington’s medical license endorsement with St. Jude Surgical Center, effective immediately.”

A collective gasp went through the room. Chloe pressed herself further against the wall, her face pale.

“Furthermore,” I continued, my gaze unwavering from Mark’s terrified eyes, “I move to strip him of all executive positions, all remaining equity, and to initiate legal proceedings to seize his personal real estate properties that were illegally acquired with hospital-backed funds.”

This was it. The full reckoning. The legal, public, and financial annihilation of Mark Harrington. I paused, taking a deep breath, preparing to cast the final, damning vote that would seal his fate within the legal and medical framework.

But before I could speak the words, before I could complete the legal document execution, a heavy hand descended onto Mark’s shoulder.

Vincent Moretti.

His touch was not aggressive, but utterly firm, implacable. Mark flinched, his body trembling.

“Dr. Harrington,” Moretti’s voice was calm, almost conversational, but it sliced through the tension like a razor. “I believe Ms. Harrington is quite capable of handling her civil court matters.”

He paused, then his eyes swept over the stunned faces of the board members. “However, such private civil disputes are entirely irrelevant to the syndicate’s collection efforts.”

He gave a slight nod to his men. The two hulking figures on either side of Mark moved swiftly, gripping him firmly by both arms. They weren’t gentle.

“Your personal guarantees, Dr. Harrington,” Moretti continued, his voice devoid of emotion, “were quite explicit. In the absence of monetary repayment, the syndicate recovers its principal and interest from… alternative sources.”

Mark’s eyes widened further, a new, primal terror filling them. He understood. His freedom. His organs. His very existence was now forfeit.

He thrashed, suddenly, violently. “No! Get off me! Help! Somebody help me!” he screamed, his voice cracking with desperate, raw fear. He tried to pull away, to fight against the steel-like grip of Moretti’s men.

The board members, however, did not move. They watched, frozen in place, their faces a mixture of horror and relief that it wasn’t them. They knew better than to intervene. Claire Dubois stood by Arthur, her face grim. Chloe, tears streaming down her face, turned her back completely, burying her face in her hands.

Moretti’s men tightened their grip. Mark’s struggles became weaker, his screams more pathetic. They began to drag him backward, toward the executive elevator bank.

“Julia! You can’t let them! Help me! Please, Julia!” he shrieked, his voice echoing down the hallway. He looked at me, a desperate, final plea in his eyes, his face contorted in abject terror.

I met his gaze, my expression unyielding. He had made his choices.

Moretti’s men did not pause. They forced Mark into the service elevator, a discreet, grey door tucked away from the main executive bank. It was an elevator usually reserved for staff, for supplies, for things that needed to disappear without a trace.

The last thing I saw was Mark’s desperate, pleading face, his hands reaching out, before the cold steel doors slid shut with a soft, final hiss, cutting off his screams abruptly.

The confrontation, the legal reckoning, the formal vote to strip him of everything – it was all cut short. Mark Harrington was gone. No formal agreement, no police arrest, no clean, definitive ending. Just the cold, silent efficiency of the syndicate.
