Outside, the storm raged, a maelstrom of wind and rain. Severe weather warnings screamed across Chicago’s emergency broadcast channels. Atmospheric lightning struck nearby high-rises, sending blinding flashes through the city’s dark canyons.
On Sub-Level 4, the emergency lights flickered, casting long, dancing shadows. The air thrummed with raw, unstable power.
Marcus descended the elevator, flanked by two armed guards, their faces grim in the flickering light. He found me inside the central control bay, near the memory chairs, cornered by the thick observation glass. His expression was a mixture of frustration and a strange, weary pity.
He walked up to the glass, his shadow falling across my face. He didn’t shout. He spoke into the comms system, his voice calm, amplified, chillingly clear in the echoing chamber.
“Julian,” he said. “This can end. Right now.”
He gestured to the memory chair, a silent, menacing invitation. “Tonight, before the night shift ends. Take the scrub. Forget all of this. Go back to your quiet life.”
He held out a hand, palm up. “Or, you hand over Clara’s drive. All of it. And I’ll give you a permanent management position upstairs. Out of the syndicate’s direct eye. A new life. A quiet, wealthy life. You can still visit Maya. I’ll arrange it.”
His gaze was intense, unwavering. “One last choice, Julian. Scrub your mind, or climb the ladder with me.”
The guards shifted, their hands resting on their sidearms. The hum of the memory chairs seemed to intensify, a hungry sound in the charged air. Outside, a new bolt of lightning fractured the sky, plunging the city into momentary blackness.
