👉 Previous Decision: You chose to play along, hide the note, and attempt to observe Marcus’s routines quietly.

I slipped the crumpled note back into my sock, the rough paper scratching against my skin. The memory of my own frantic handwriting, the stark warning about Marcus and Maya, burned in my mind.

The morning commute to OmniTech Solutions felt different. The familiar rumble of the train, the faces in the crowded car – everything seemed sharper, tinged with a desperate urgency.

When I stepped off the Sub-Level 4 elevator, Marcus was already by the coffee machine, a calm smile on his face. He held a steaming mug, his gaze steady.

“Morning, Julian,” he said, his voice even. “Early start.”

“Couldn’t sleep,” I replied, forcing a casual shrug. My eyes swept over the pristine chrome and glass, searching for something, anything, out of place.

I watched him as he moved, a quiet predator in a tailored suit. He ran his hand over the biometric scanner for the central server room, then gestured to the daily log for the network team. Every keycard swipe, every door chime, every exit protocol on the floor seemed to be under his meticulous, unblinking control.

He walked over to my workstation, his shadow falling across my screen. He clapped me on the shoulder, the gesture surprisingly firm.

“Good to see you settled in, Julian,” Marcus said. “Excellent work on the encryption logs yesterday. You’re a natural.”

He paused, tilting his head slightly. His eyes narrowed, scanning my face.

“You seem a little distracted, though,” he added, his voice dropping just perceptibly. “Everything alright?”

My breath hitched. I tried to smooth my posture, to force a relaxed expression, but my muscles felt stiff.

“Just a long night,” I managed, my voice a bit too tight.

Marcus’s smile didn’t waver, but his eyes hardened just for a flicker. He glanced towards the main hallway exit, then subtly nodded.

Two heavy-set security guards, always present but usually discreetly positioned, immediately shifted. They moved with practiced efficiency, their large frames filling the entire width of the hallway, blocking the only way out.
