A Night-Shift 911 Dispatcher Receives a Break-In Call for Her Own Home Address, Uncovering Her Politician Ex-Fiancé's Deadly Cover-Up
👉 Previous decision: You chose to steal a maintenance vehicle and drive straight to 1428 Elmcrest Lane to reach Chloe.
“Give me the keys, Darren,” I demanded, already reaching for the battered utility van parked outside the maintenance bay. “I’m going to Chloe.”
He tossed them, a grim look on his face. “Be careful, Maya. They’ll be looking for you.”
I didn’t wait. I fumbled with the ignition, the old engine sputtering to life, and then I was off, tearing out of the dispatch parking lot. Rain lashed against the windshield, blurring my vision.
I ran four red lights, the blare of my horn the only sound cutting through the downpour. My hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white. Over the maintenance radio, I heard the cacophony of police transmissions.
“All units, disregard previous orders,” a stern voice cut through the static. Chief Detective Sarah Jennings. “Converge on 1428 Elmcrest Lane. This is a priority one. Repeat, priority one.”
Her voice, clear and unyielding, sliced through the precinct captain’s stall tactics. A momentary surge of relief, quickly extinguished by the cold dread still lodged in my throat. Would it be enough? Was it too late?
I screeched to a halt two blocks from my house, the street already a flashing tableau of blue and red lights. Paramedic vehicles. Fire trucks. My heart seized.
I threw open the van door and ran, pushing past the yellow police tape. Officers moved quickly, their faces grim. A small crowd had gathered, shielded by umbrellas, watching in morbid silence.
And then I saw it. Two paramedics, their movements practiced and efficient, pulling a lifeless body on a stretcher from my front porch. A blanket was already drawn over the face.
My breath caught in my throat. My legs gave out.
No.
