The dispatch center became a beehive of chaos. Local news channels flashed urgent banner alerts across their screens: “DA Candidate Reynolds Embroiled in $2.4M Scandal.” My phone, still plugged into Darren’s laptop, buzzed incessantly with calls from desperate reporters.

Gabe Lawson, across the room, looked utterly broken. He slammed his desk phone down, then buried his face in his hands. His shoulders shook.

Darren walked over, his expression grim. “He looks like he’s about to crack.”

I approached Gabe’s console. He looked up, his eyes red and swollen.

“They lied to me, Ms. Lin,” he choked out, his voice thick with tears. “Marcus’s staff. Mr. Thorne. They said you were under internal investigation. For… for drug theft. They said holding Sector 4 calls was protocol. To secure evidence.”

My stomach churned. The depth of Marcus’s deception, his willingness to manipulate an innocent rookie, was staggering. Not just sabotage, but utter psychological warfare.

“They promised me a junior precinct director job,” Gabe continued, burying his face again. “They said I’d be fast-tracked.”

“Give me your master key, Gabe,” Darren said, his voice firm but not unkind. “Now.”

Gabe nodded numbly, fumbling for a small, metallic keycard attached to his lanyard. Darren snatched it, his eyes blazing.

He slid the keycard into a slot on Gabe’s console, tapping furiously. The monitor flashed a warning: “EMERGENCY BROADCAST OVERRIDE – ALL CHANNELS.”

“This will hit every unit in Fairfax County,” Darren stated, his voice ringing with grim satisfaction. “They’ll hear everything from your house. Live.”

He tapped one final key. The audio feed from 1428 Elmcrest Lane, still live on Darren’s laptop, broadcast a muffled grunt, the sound of heavy breathing, and a faint, desperate cough, now amplified across every police frequency in the county.
