The sound of movement on the audio feed was frantic. Chloe, moving fast. I heard a soft thump, a whisper of fabric. She must have reached the guitar case.
“Did you get it?” I whispered into the phone, my heart pounding against my ribs.
“Yes,” Chloe breathed. “It’s here. I’m going for the roof.”
Suddenly, a loud scuff, then a yelp from Chloe.
“Drop it!” a deep voice roared, closer now.
A sickening thud followed. The phone slipped from Chloe’s hand, the audio cutting to static for a split second before her pained cry ripped through the speaker.
“No!” I screamed into my phone, but it was already too late.
The heavy footsteps closed in. I heard a grunt, then the distinct sound of a struggle. A gasping, desperate sound from Chloe, then a loud, sickening crack.
The audio feed went silent for a moment, then a metallic clatter. Something fell. Then, a heavy, dead weight.
A moan, low and guttural, escaped Chloe’s lips, followed by a series of desperate coughs. The sounds of a body tumbling, hitting each wooden stair with brutal finality. A final, horrifying thud as she reached the bottom.
Then, silence.
Only the static of the open phone line and the heavy breathing of the intruder remained.
