At 5:00 AM, the hospital ICU waiting area hummed with a sterile tension. I watched through the glass partition as doctors inserted a ventilator into Chloe’s throat, her chest rising and falling with the mechanical rhythm. My world had narrowed to the fragile life in that room.
Chief Detective Jennings walked in, carrying a portable broadcast monitor. Her face was grim, her eyes fixed on the screen.
“You need to see this, Maya,” she said, her voice low.
The monitor showed live coverage from Dulles International Airport. Marcus Reynolds, unmistakable even in the pre-dawn gloom, was sprinting across the tarmac toward a waiting private jet. A duffel bag, clearly bulging, swung from his hand.
“Reports confirm he has $400,000 in cash,” Detective Jennings murmured, her gaze unwavering. “Attempting to flee the country.”
