👉 Previous decision: You chose to stay at the dispatch center with Darren to execute the federal press leak.

“Stay,” I told Darren, my voice firm despite the tremor in my hands. “Get that affidavit out. All of it. Federally.”

He nodded, already hunched over his laptop, fingers flying across the keys. The server room hummed around us, a frantic symphony of data transfer.

The heavy steel door to the maintenance bay swung open. Precinct Captain Miller, a man I recognized from campaign events, stood framed in the doorway, two uniformed officers behind him. His face was grim.

“Ms. Lin,” he stated, his voice like flint, “I have orders to seize these servers. Immediately. We have an injunction.”

“Operational security breach,” I echoed, my eyes locked with his. “Or maybe you just want to bury the truth, Captain?”

Miller’s jaw tightened. He started to step inside.

“Stand back, Captain,” Darren warned, his eyes never leaving the screen. “Federal transmission in progress. Tampering with this constitutes obstruction of a federal investigation.”

The Captain hesitated, his gaze flicking between Darren’s screen, glowing with progress bars, and the officers behind him. He wasn’t expecting federal involvement. Marcus had overplayed his hand.

Just as Miller took another step, Darren slammed his palm onto a red button on the wall. A heavy clunk echoed through the room as the vault door hissed shut, locking from the inside with a thud.

The captain rattled the door handle, then pounded on the steel. “Open this door, O’Connor!”

“Transfer at 97%,” Darren announced, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. “Just a few more seconds, Captain.”

The progress bar hit 100%. Darren held up his small flash drive, blinking with a green light. The full, 35-page affidavit, including Arthur Pendelton’s signed, notarized statement, was now secured by federal prosecutors and simultaneously sent to every major news outlet.
