My phone rang, a cold dread seizing me. It was the trauma center.
“Chloe Lin has arrived in critical condition,” the voice on the other end reported, clinical and distant. “Severe neurological injury from prolonged hypoxia. We’re doing everything we can.”
I stood frozen in the server room, the words ringing in my ears. Darren gently touched my arm.
“They found her, Maya. That’s good, right?” he asked, his voice low.
I could only nod, my throat tight. Found, but broken.
Outside the vault door, the pounding had stopped. Instead, a chorus of shouting voices rose. News crews. Federal agents.
Darren, taking a deep breath, unlocked the heavy steel door. It swung open to a swarm of camera lights and microphones. Federal agents, their faces stern, pushed through the crowd toward us.
“Mr. O’Connor, Ms. Lin,” an agent with a federal badge stated, “we have confirmation of your transmission. We’re here to secure the physical audio master tapes and any hard drives.”
Darren nodded, already handing over a secure case.
Across the room, on a large overhead monitor, Marcus Reynolds’s face filled the screen. He was at his campaign headquarters, attempting to address a huddle of reporters, but the chaos was overwhelming. News tickers scrolled below him, detailing the federal investigation into the $2.4 million scandal.
The world was watching. Justice for Marcus was coming. But for Chloe, a different, colder reality was setting in.
