Chapter 12: A: The Eternal Steward

👉 Previous Decision: You chose to offer to split the compound land equally with Jonah to keep the peace.

Jonah Cross stopped at the door, his hand on the polished brass knob. His shoulders visibly tensed.

“A split?” he asked, turning slowly. His eyes narrowed, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them.

“Half for your compound, half for the sanctuary,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. “We can draw a new boundary line. Preserve Mother Abigail’s legacy, and ensure stability for both our communities.”

He walked back to the desk, his footsteps soft on the thick rug. He picked up one of the excommunication writs he had presented, then tore it in half with a deliberate, ripping sound.

“Grace,” he said, a strange, almost gentle tone in his voice that sent a shiver down my spine. “You are indeed a steward of peace.”

I felt a small knot in my stomach loosen. Perhaps this nightmare could end with negotiation, not destruction.

“However,” he continued, his voice hardening, “this concession, this offer to re-draw sacred lines, is an admission of weakness. It suggests you believe the original deeds are, themselves, in question.”

My eyes darted to the legal papers still on the desk. What was he saying?

“I hereby accept your admission that the land claims are disputable,” he declared, his voice rising, formal and chilling. “And I will use this admission as evidence of your attempted land fraud. Fraud against the Order, fraud against Mother Abigail’s true vision.”

He pulled out a fresh stack of documents from his satchel, even thicker than the first. These were official-looking state forms, already stamped and dated.

“By offering to split land that is legally yours,” he explained, “you’ve undermined your own claim to its full ownership. The state views this as an attempt to illegally subdivide property without proper permits, and to defraud the rightful beneficiaries of the estate.”

My mind reeled. He was twisting my good faith offer, turning it into a weapon against me.

“This is a petition to the county land commission,” he said, tapping a document with a manicured finger. “Filed moments ago. It states that you, Grace Kincaid, attempted to illegally re-partition Order lands, thereby bringing financial ruin to the sanctuary through frivolous legal challenges.”

He laid down another document. “And this, Grace, is a cult edict, signed by the senior council, stating that your actions have caused grave scandal. All members are now forbidden to offer you aid, shelter, or even a single word. You are cut off.”

The room seemed to spin. I had tried to prevent war, and instead had handed him the very ammunition he needed to destroy me. The thirty million dollars might as well have been thirty cents. Without legal standing, without community, I was adrift.

Jonah smiled, a slow, predatory grin that never reached his eyes. “You tried to share. Now you have nothing. Not even a home.”

He turned and walked out, leaving me surrounded by papers that had become instruments of my undoing, isolated, and utterly ruined.
