The Covenant's Burden
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to accept Jonah’s offer for an internal cult tribunal arbitration.
The tribunal convened in the sanctuary’s main assembly hall. Three elders, loyal to Jonah, sat on a raised platform, their faces stern and unyielding. The air was thick with expectation, the silence broken only by the creak of the old wooden floorboards.
Jonah stood before them, a picture of calm piety, his hands clasped, his voice resonating with conviction. He painted a picture of me as a corrupt, worldly woman, unfit to guide Mother Abigail’s flock, dredging up every detail of my past, twisting it into a narrative of greed and unfaithfulness.
When it was my turn, I tried to speak of Mother Abigail’s true intentions, of the spirit of charity and service she had instilled. I spoke of the ledgers, the documents proving my faithful stewardship.
One of the elders, Brother Thomas, raised a hand. “Sister Grace,” he intoned, his voice deep and slow, “your past struggles are well known. Your claims of financial fidelity are… suspicious, given your history of personal bankruptcy. The Order requires absolute purity of heart in its stewards.”
I looked at Jonah, who stood in the back, a smug smile playing on his lips. He had stacked the deck. There was no justice here, only a predetermined outcome.
The tribunal ruled swiftly, citing “grave breaches of spiritual conduct” and “administrative incompetence.” My civil rights, as a member of the Order, were suspended. All access to sanctuary funds, archives, and even legal counsel was revoked indefinitely.
“You are hereby placed under administrative debt appeals,” Brother Thomas declared, his voice echoing in the vast hall. “All future petitions for recourse must go through the council, one at a time, to be reviewed at their discretion. This process will be exhaustive, lasting as long as necessary to restore the Order’s financial integrity.”
My heart sank. This wasn’t about justice; it was about burying me in endless bureaucracy. Every request, every document, every appeal would be met with delay, denial, or simply silence. I would be trapped in a perpetual loop of administrative purgatory, stripped of my will and resources, unable to escape or fight back.
Jonah stepped forward, a triumphant gleam in his eyes. “The Order’s finances will be protected,” he announced to the room, “under the careful guidance of the senior council.”
My voice, when I tried to speak, came out as a whisper. “This is not Mother Abigail’s way.”
Brother Thomas fixed me with a cold stare. “The Order has its own laws, Grace. And you have transgressed them. Your penance will be long, and costly.”
I was led away, the weight of their judgment settling heavily on my shoulders. The sanctuary, once my haven, had become my prison, its rules twisted to serve Jonah’s will, ensuring my slow, agonizing defeat.
