👉 Previous Decision: You chose to hold your position in the tower until morning light as a violent, freak unseasonal lightning storm hit the valley.

The sanctuary tower became an island in a raging tempest. Outside, the unseasonal storm howled with a fury that felt ancient. Wind lashed against the stone, rain hammered the narrow windows, and thunder cracked directly overhead, vibrating through the very foundations of the building. With the power out, Miriam and I huddled in the inky darkness, lit only by the sporadic, blinding flashes of lightning that illuminated the room in stark, ghostly white.

Miriam’s binders, containing Jonah’s forged documents and the proof of their fabrication, lay open on the floor between us. My own copy of Mother Abigail’s true charter was tucked safely beneath my arm. We heard the distant shouts of Jonah’s militia, the roar of their vehicles, but the storm swallowed their sounds, making them seem unreal.

“He’ll wait until the storm lets up,” I whispered, trying to make my voice heard over the din.

Miriam shook her head, her face pale in a sudden flash of lightning. “No. This is his opportunity. The chaos. No witnesses. He’s too close to losing everything.”

Suddenly, the heavy oak door at the base of the tower groaned. Then a loud splintering crash echoed up the stairwell. He had breached the main entrance. My heart pounded against my ribs.

Footsteps, heavy and deliberate, began ascending the winding stairs. Each creak on the old wood resonated in the storm-swept silence between thunderclaps. Miriam’s hand shot out, grasping my arm, her grip tight and cold. We both knew who it was.

The footsteps stopped just outside our chamber. The wooden barricade I had placed across the door groaned under an immense force. Then, another crash, and the heavy iron-bound chest slid across the floor, scraping loudly. The door, now ajar, revealed a silhouette framed by the sporadic lightning, large and imposing.

Jonah Cross. Alone. He stood there, rain plastering his dark robes to his body, his face illuminated by a crack of lightning, twisted into a mask of grim determination. He held a small, dark object in his hand, something metallic that glinted wickedly.

“Grace,” he said, his voice strangely calm over the howling wind. “Miriam. This ends tonight. Give me those documents. All of them.”

He took a step into the room, his eyes scanning the darkness, searching for the binders on the floor. The air crackled with the storm’s energy, a tangible tension hanging between us. He had come for the evidence, intending to destroy it himself, leaving no trace.

The wind shrieked, and another blinding flash of lightning lit up the entire room, showing the desperation in Jonah’s eyes, the weapon in his hand, and the truth laid out on the floor before him. It was a private confrontation, isolated and deadly, in the heart of the tempest.
