The Covenant's Burden
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to assume full legal stewardship of the reformed sanctuary estate.
The morning after the storm, the air was still thick with the smell of wet ash and ozone, but a new dawn broke over the sanctuary. The top of the tower was a black, jagged ruin, but the rest of the main building stood, scarred but intact. Jonah Cross, severely burned and facing multiple charges of fraud and intimidation, was quickly transferred from the local clinic to state custody. His militia had been disbanded, and his adjacent compound was being investigated.
Miriam Cross, a quiet force of nature, became my staunchest ally. Her testimony, combined with the miraculously preserved true charter and attorney Seth Lindqvist’s reluctant but now full cooperation, secured the sanctuary’s legal ownership under my stewardship. The Order’s assets, previously frozen, were unfrozen, and the fraudulent liens against the property were swiftly removed.
The initial months were a whirlwind of legal and administrative work. I spent countless hours with accountants and legal experts, untangling decades of complex land trusts and financial schemes that Jonah had woven around the Order. Every day uncovered another layer of his duplicity, another hidden account, another misappropriated donation. Miriam, with her intimate knowledge of Jonah’s methods, was invaluable.
But beyond the legal battles, there was the spiritual task of rebuilding. The faithful, disillusioned by Jonah’s corruption, needed healing. I opened the sanctuary’s doors to those who had been exiled, to those who had suffered under Jonah’s tyranny. We established outreach programs for former cult members, offering counseling and support, a safe haven for souls bruised by false prophets.
“Mother Abigail always intended this place to be a refuge,” I told Miriam one quiet evening, looking out at the rebuilt, bustling refectory. “A place of grace for those rebuilding their lives.”
Miriam nodded, a small, sad smile on her lips. “And you, Grace, are continuing her work. But this is a heavy burden, isn’t it? Such a large estate, so many responsibilities.”
I looked at the children playing in the sun-drenched courtyard, at the faces of people finding peace after years of turmoil. The thirty-million-dollar estate was no longer a burden of wealth, but a burden of stewardship. I had inherited not just property, but a profound responsibility. My past, once a source of shame, now made me uniquely empathetic to their struggles, transforming the sanctuary into a true haven.
