The Covenant's Burden
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to offer to destroy the documents yourself in exchange for your freedom.
The wind howled, the tower shook. Jonah stood before us, the letter opener gleaming. His rage was palpable, a live thing in the stormy darkness. I knew he would stop at nothing. Perhaps, I thought, a different kind of sacrifice could save us all.
“Jonah, wait!” I cried, my voice strained. “Don’t burn the sanctuary. Don’t risk everything. I’ll destroy the documents myself. All of them. Your forged ones, Miriam’s evidence, even Mother Abigail’s charter. Just let us go. Let me walk away free, and I swear, I’ll never return, never speak a word.”
Miriam gasped, a horrified sound, but I kept my gaze fixed on Jonah. His eyes narrowed, assessing. The anger in his face slowly gave way to a calculating, predatory smirk.
“A wise choice, Grace,” he said, lowering the letter opener slightly. “A truly wise choice. Hand them over.”
My stomach churned, but I held out Miriam’s binders and the true charter. It felt like tearing a piece of my soul away. He snatched them from my hands, his touch cold and dismissive.
A blinding flash of lightning illuminated his face. He looked at the documents, then at the lit lantern Miriam had brought, still flickering in a corner. With a cruel grin, he tossed all the papers onto the floor near the small flame. The dry paper caught quickly, flames leaping up, consuming the evidence of his fraud, and of Mother Abigail’s true will, in a hungry crackle.
My heart ached, watching Mother Abigail’s careful script turn to ash. Miriam let out a choked sob. He had won. I had sacrificed everything for nothing.
“There,” Jonah said, watching the fire with satisfaction. “All disputes resolved. And now, as per our agreement, you are free to leave. Permanently.”
He gestured to the open door, where two of his militia men now stood. They moved to flank me and Miriam, their faces impassive. There was no true freedom here, only the bitter taste of utter defeat.
“Get out,” Jonah commanded, his voice cold. “And never return. This sanctuary is cleansed. Reclaimed.”
Stripped of all evidence, stripped of hope, I was pushed out of the tower, Miriam weeping quietly beside me. The storm raged, but the true devastation was within, where Mother Abigail’s legacy had just been extinguished by my own hand, leaving me with nothing but ashes and regret.
