👉 Previous Decision: You chose to drag Jonah out of the burning room and secure the true charter.

The tower chamber was a maelstrom of burning paper, the furious crackle of flames consuming Jonah’s lies. The metallic tang of ozone hung heavy in the air, mingling with the acrid scent of scorched paper. Miriam pulled me towards the door, her face a mask of terror.

“The fire, Grace! We have to go!” she cried, her voice thin against the storm’s roar.

But my gaze was fixed on Jonah, lying prone amidst the growing blaze, his dark robes beginning to smolder. Mother Abigail’s teachings echoed in my mind: “Even your enemies are souls in need of grace.” And the true charter, still clutched in my hand, was more than just paper; it was the heart of the sanctuary.

“I can’t leave him,” I shouted, pushing past Miriam. The heat was intense, searing my skin. I bent down, ignoring the pain, and dragged Jonah by his shoulders. He was a heavy man, but adrenaline surged through me. My feet slipped on the dusty, now wet, floor.

Miriam, seeing my resolve, rushed to my side. Together, we hauled Jonah’s unconscious form away from the rapidly spreading flames, pulling him through the doorway and onto the relative safety of the spiral staircase landing. His forged documents were now entirely engulfed, reduced to a heap of glowing embers. The fire, fed by the dry paper and the old wood of the tower floor, was already a roaring beast.

“Call the authorities!” Miriam screamed, remembering the phone signal might be gone with the power out. “The emergency line!”

I fumbled for my old burner phone, its signal a miracle in the rural darkness. My fingers, trembling from the heat and the shock, dialed 911. “Fire at the Order of the New Dawn sanctuary tower,” I gasped into the receiver, “and a man is injured. We have evidence of fraud, too.”

The sounds of sirens, previously swallowed by the storm, now grew steadily louder. The lightning still flashed, but with less fury. The worst of the unseasonal tempest had passed, leaving behind its strange, destructive cleansing. Within minutes, fire trucks and police cruisers were pulling up to the base of the tower. Jonah’s militia, scattered by the chaos of the lightning strike and the unexpected emergency services, were quickly disarmed and detained.

Paramedics rushed in, attending to Jonah. Miriam, with a newfound strength, began explaining everything to the sheriff, displaying the remains of the charred documents, pointing to the original charter in my hand, detailing Jonah’s years of deceit. Attorney Seth Lindqvist, looking pale and shaken, arrived with other council members, and with the physical evidence burned away and Miriam’s testimony, he was compelled to corroborate the true history of the deeds.

The destruction of Jonah’s legal files by the lightning, coupled with Miriam’s public exposure of his long campaign of manipulation, shattered his authority. His grip on the sanctuary, built on lies and intimidation, was broken forever. The Order of the New Dawn would need to rebuild, literally and figuratively, but it would be built on truth this time.
