👉 Previous Decision: You chose to transition leadership to a public charitable trust and move to the coast.

After a year of relentless work, the Order of the New Dawn sanctuary was truly transformed. The old tower, now partially rebuilt, served as a symbolic beacon of truth. Jonah Cross was serving a long sentence for fraud and assault, his power utterly dismantled. Miriam Cross had found a new purpose, overseeing the sanctuary’s social programs and providing compassionate guidance to those rebuilding their lives.

But the weight of managing a multi-million-dollar estate, of being the figurehead of such a large, complex institution, began to press down on me. My twenty years of humble service under Mother Abigail had prepared me for caretaking, not administration. I sought the quiet corners, the simple tasks, the direct connection with those in need. The endless meetings, the financial projections, the public relations—they drained me.

“Miriam,” I said one crisp autumn morning, “this place needs someone with a different kind of strength now. A public face, a true administrator.”

Miriam looked at me, understanding in her eyes. “You’ve given it a new life, Grace. You saved it.”

“And now it needs to fly on its own,” I replied. I spent the next few months meticulously establishing a public charitable trust, ensuring the sanctuary’s future would be protected from any single individual’s ambition. A board of ethical, community-minded trustees was appointed, including Miriam herself. I formally stepped down from active leadership, quietly detaching myself from the day-to-day operations.

With my mission accomplished, I felt a deep longing for the simplicity that had once defined my life. The mountains of Vermont had offered refuge, but the endless cycle of winter and the weight of the past still clung to the air. I needed a new horizon, a different kind of peace.

I sold the few possessions I had accumulated, packed a single suitcase, and drove east, towards the coast. Five years passed in a peaceful blur. I settled in a small, weathered cottage overlooking the rocky shores of Maine, far from the echoes of the Order. The scent of salt and pine replaced the heavy incense of the sanctuary. I found work as a simple caretaker for a small, historic coastal chapel, a place where vulnerable souls, often travelers or those lost at sea, sometimes sought solace. I lived a quiet life, tending to the chapel, the gardens, and offering a silent, listening ear to those who passed through.

The past was a distant echo, the burden of the Order lifted from my shoulders. Or so I thought.
