I couldn’t shake Daniel’s words about the covenant. The idea of a document from centuries past dictating modern property rights was unsettling, but his next confession was even more so.

“There’s more, Mom,” Daniel said, his voice dropping, “much more.”

He hesitated, a deep frown on his face.

“I almost didn’t tell you this, because it feels like such a huge invasion of privacy,” he admitted. “But after I found those old covenant records, I started to look for anything else that might explain Bethany’s… fixation. Anything that could hint at her true motivations.”

He pushed his plate away, the remains of his sandwich untouched.

“I was in Arthur’s study a few weeks ago,” he began. “Helping him organize some old tax documents. He asked me to clear out a drawer in his antique desk. It was full of old letters, faded photographs, mostly from his first marriage.”

I remembered that desk. It was an imposing mahogany piece, usually kept locked. Arthur rarely let anyone touch its contents.

“Tucked away at the very bottom, beneath a stack of sentimental cards from Arthur’s first wife, Elizabeth,” Daniel continued, “I found it. An old diary.”

He watched my face for a reaction. My breath hitched. Elizabeth’s diary. Arthur had never mentioned it. He rarely spoke of his first wife, a quiet, almost reverent silence hanging over her memory.

“It was bound in worn leather, the pages brittle with age,” Daniel said. “It looked like she had written in it for years. I didn’t mean to read it, Mom, not really. But a page fell open, and I saw a date… just a few months before Bethany was born. And then another date, weeks later.”

He paused, clearly struggling with the memory.

“The entries were cryptic, fragmented, almost poetic,” Daniel explained, his voice low. “But they hinted at a deep secret. Elizabeth wrote about ‘a love born in shadow,’ ‘a truth only the stars would witness,’ and ‘the desperate choice to shield a fragile heart.’ She mentioned a man who wasn’t Arthur, a whirlwind romance before her marriage, and then… the sudden, overwhelming realization that she was pregnant.”

My hands flew to my mouth. A gasp escaped my lips.

“Pregnant?” I repeated, my mind reeling. “With… with Bethany?”

Daniel nodded, his eyes grave.

“That’s what it implied, Mom,” he confirmed. “The timing of the entries, the despair, the fear of Arthur finding out. It was all there. It wasn’t explicit, but the implication was undeniable: Elizabeth had conceived Bethany with another man, before she married Arthur, and they had kept it a secret their entire lives.”

The room spun for a moment. Bethany was not Arthur’s biological daughter? This was a bombshell of unimaginable proportions, a secret kept for nearly forty years. It explained so much, and yet, nothing at all.

“My first instinct was to put it back,” Daniel confessed. “To pretend I never saw it. But then I thought about Bethany and Calvin, about their ruthlessness, about this covenant, about how much pain they were causing you. And I couldn’t just ignore it.”

He looked at me, a fierce determination in his eyes.

“If Bethany’s entire claim to Arthur’s inheritance, to her identity as ‘Arthur Shaw’s daughter,’ is based on a lie,” he said, “then we needed to know for certain. For your protection, Mom. For Arthur’s, too, even if he doesn’t realize it.”

“So,” he continued, “I did something else. Something I know might seem extreme, even unethical, for a journalist. But I had to know. I had to protect you.”

He leaned closer.

“Bethany had left a discarded coffee cup in the kitchen,” he explained. “Just after she and Calvin arrived. She’d been using it for a few days. I knew it was her DNA. I discreetly bagged it, sealed it, and sent it off for a private DNA test.”

I felt a cold shock, then a tremor of fear. A DNA test. Without Bethany’s knowledge, based on a discarded item. It was a drastic, desperate measure. But the sheer audacity of Bethany and Calvin, their blatant disregard for my peace and Arthur’s dignity, pushed me to understand Daniel’s actions.

“You sent it for testing?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Yes,” he confirmed. “It was expensive, and it felt like a gamble. But if that diary was telling the truth, and if the covenant truly links property rights to bloodline… then this DNA test changes everything. It doesn’t just dismantle Bethany’s financial claims, Mom. It unravels her entire identity, her perceived birthright.”

I closed my eyes, picturing Arthur, so burdened by secrets. His coldness, his meticulous records of Bethany’s debts, his profound withdrawal. It all started to make a terrifying, heartbreaking kind of sense. He had spent his life protecting a lie, covering up a truth that wasn’t even his to hide.

“My mind is reeling, Daniel,” I said, opening my eyes. “Could Bethany’s entire identity be a lie? What would that do to her? To Arthur?”

The thought of Arthur living with this burden for decades, never revealing it, broke my heart. And Bethany, so entitled, so convinced of her inherent right to Arthur’s wealth, perhaps unknowingly building her life on a foundation of sand. The sheer weight of such a secret was crushing.

“It might explain why she’s so aggressive, so desperate,” Daniel mused. “Maybe, deep down, she always suspected something. Or maybe she’s completely unaware, and this will be an even bigger shock for her.”

He got up and began pacing the small kitchen.

“Either way, the truth is coming, Mom,” he said, his voice firm. “And we need to be ready for it. Whatever it means for Bethany, for Arthur, for this house… it’s going to be exposed.”

I nodded, a profound sense of inevitability settling over me. The ancient covenant, the hidden diary, the secret DNA test. The threads of a long-held secret were finally unraveling, and I knew, with a certainty that chilled me to my core, that nothing in Willow Creek would ever be the same again.
