Trapped in a Night Rideshare Driven by My Father-in-Law Heading Straight to a Dark Cemetery
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to refuse to leave Arthur behind, forcing both of them into the narrow utility tunnel with the cryo-case.
“No,” I insisted, shaking my head. “We go together.”
Arthur stared at me, a flicker of surprise in his tired eyes. I hoisted the heavy 40-pound cryo-case, its cold surface a stark contrast to the urgency of the moment. With my free hand, I helped Arthur towards the rusted grate.
The utility tunnel was a cramped, dark space, barely wide enough for one person, let alone two with a bulky case. Arthur groaned, his movements slow and painful. The delay was critical.
I heard shouts from behind us. A harsh light flared in the darkness, followed by the clanging sound of the grate being torn away.
“There they are!” a voice bellowed.
We were cornered. Ahead, the tunnel curved sharply. Behind us, two figures in tactical gear, armed with flashlights and stun guns, advanced. They wore optical visors, distorting their faces into menacing silhouettes.
“Drop the package, Doctor,” the lead guard ordered, his voice flat.
My heart pounded. I pulled the specialized ophthalmic bio-scanner from my pocket, the same device I’d used to diagnose patients. It wasn’t designed as a weapon, but the concentrated laser could do damage.
I flicked it on, aimed, and fired. A beam of intense, focused light lanced forward, striking the lead guard’s optical visor. He roared, clutching at his face, stumbling backwards. His partner hesitated.
It was enough. We scrambled through the curve, gaining precious seconds. The tunnel opened into the cool night air of a public park. We burst onto the street, blinking against the distant city lights.
