Trapped in a Night Rideshare Driven by My Father-in-Law Heading Straight to a Dark Cemetery
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to drag Arthur out of the wreck and into the mausoleum shelter before the unknown vehicle arrives.
The approaching headlights intensified, raking across the twisted metal of Arthur’s car. I gritted my teeth, ignoring the protest of my own battered muscles, and hauled Arthur’s heavy frame from the driver’s seat. His body was limp, a dead weight.
“Hang on, Arthur,” I muttered, my voice tight.
I dragged him across the uneven ground, past crumbling headstones, towards the massive, imposing structure of the Pine Ridge Mausoleum. Its heavy bronze doors, green with age, loomed ahead. With a desperate shove, I forced one open, the hinges groaning like an ancient beast.
Just as I pulled Arthur inside, the black SUV swept past the wreck, its powerful headlights illuminating the scene of the crash. I leaned against the closed door, my chest heaving, the metallic tang of fear in my mouth.
Arthur coughed, a ragged, wet sound. His eyes fluttered open, unfocused at first, then sharpening on my face. A low groan escaped his lips.
“Mark?” he rasped, his voice raw.
I watched him, my guard still up. “What was that about, Arthur? What’s going on?”
He reached a trembling hand into his jacket, pulling out a slim biometric keycard. “The reflection… it was the lenses,” he managed, his breathing shallow. “High-dose polarized filter. To hide the jaundice.”
My eyes widened. Ocular jaundice. A severe symptom of end-stage liver failure. The mystery of the missing reflection suddenly made a terrible, tragic sense.
“You’re… sick?” I asked, a tremor in my own voice.
He nodded, pressing the keycard into my palm. “Beneath the altar,” he whispered, pointing a weak finger towards a hidden stone staircase that spiraled down into darkness. “It’s all there.”
