Chapter 16: A Kitchen in Queens

Julian Reyes, looking pale and gaunt, sat in a drab interview room at the federal courthouse. He glared at Agent Jenkins across the table, his lawyer, a new, less expensive one, by his side.

“I am formally revoking my spousal sponsorship for Elena Reyes’s green card,” Julian announced, his voice clipped and cold. He leaned back, a sneer playing on his lips. “She will be deported. Then her testimony will be worthless. Who would believe a stateless immigrant?”

He believed this was his final, devastating blow. He thought he could pull the rug out from under me, render me helpless and voiceless, just as he had always intended. He watched Jenkins’s face for a reaction, expecting concern, perhaps a flicker of panic.

Agent Jenkins, however, simply picked up a crisp, official-looking document from her folder. She placed it on the table and slid it across to Julian’s lawyer.

“Mr. Reyes,” she stated, her voice devoid of any emotion. “Your attempt to revoke Ms. Reyes’s spousal sponsorship is noted. However, it will have no legal effect on her standing.”

Julian scoffed. “Impossible. She came here on my petition.”

“Her original entry was indeed sponsored by your marriage,” Jenkins conceded. “However, Ms. Reyes’s father, Hector Cruz, is a senior international prosecutor with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed. He knew Hector was a high-ranking official, but the full extent of his influence had always been vague.

“Mr. Cruz and his immediate family, including Elena, hold independent special entry visas,” Jenkins continued, her gaze unwavering. “These visas are granted under diplomatic protocols, entirely separate from spousal sponsorships. They are not dependent on your marital status, nor are they revokable by you.”

Julian’s lawyer picked up the document. It was a diplomatic memo, thick with official seals and international legal jargon. He scanned it, his face draining of color. His shoulders slumped.

“Furthermore,” Agent Jenkins added, “due to the nature of this federal wire fraud investigation and Ms. Reyes’s pivotal role as a whistleblower, she has been granted additional federal protection under specific provisions for witnesses in international criminal cases.”

Julian pushed himself back from the table, his chair scraping loudly. His mouth hung open slightly, a primal shock rippling through him. The visa, his ultimate weapon, had shattered in his hand. The silent, terrified immigrant bride he had controlled for so long was an illusion. I had never been dependent on him, not truly. My father’s authority, his international standing, had always been a shield I didn’t even know I possessed.

His face contorted in a silent scream. The one thing he thought he had absolute power over—my very presence in this country—was just another lie he had told himself.
