Chapter 16: A Kitchen in Queens

Julian Reyes, handcuffed and heavily guarded, sat across from his high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Sterling Vance. Vance, renowned for getting the wealthy out of tight spots, was speaking rapidly, his voice confident.

“Don’t worry, Julian,” Vance assured him, tapping a pen against a thick legal pad. “We’re filing for a change of venue, arguing prosecutorial overreach. And we’ll challenge every piece of evidence. The audio? It’s easily doctored. The analyst? Compromised.”

Julian nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. He still believed money could buy his way out.

“The $2 million retainer trust you arranged offshore is crucial,” Vance continued. “It ensures we can dedicate unlimited resources to your defense. No stone unturned.”

He stood to pace the room, his expensive suit impeccable. “We’ll build a narrative of a vengeful, scorned wife collaborating with an overzealous father. We’ll pick apart her credibility. We can drag this out for years.”

Just then, the door to the interview room opened. Two federal marshals, their faces grim, stepped inside. They carried an official document.

“Mr. Vance,” one of them said, his voice curt. “We have a court order for you.”

Vance stopped pacing, a look of annoyance on his face. “What is this?”

“A RICO forfeiture order,” the marshal stated, handing him the document. “Issued against the escrow account holding Mr. Reyes’s $2 million offshore retainer trust.”

Vance snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the legalese. His face went pale, his confident demeanor vanishing.

“Impossible,” Vance muttered, his voice barely audible. “This is… illegal.”

“The court found sufficient evidence to consider those funds the proceeds of illegal activity, directly tied to the RICO conspiracy charges Mr. Reyes is facing,” the marshal explained. “They are now federal property.”

Julian surged forward, rattling his handcuffs. “My money! You can’t do that! That’s for my defense!”

“Mr. Reyes,” the marshal said, looking directly at him. “The trust is seized. Your legal counsel will be informed. You will now be assigned a court-appointed public defender.”

Vance stood frozen, the forfeiture order clutched in his hand. His dream of a massive, long-term defense, with millions in fees, had just evaporated. He looked at Julian with a mixture of disbelief and utter disgust. This was no longer a profitable client; this was a liability.

Julian screamed, a raw, inarticulate sound of pure fury and helplessness. His last hope of buying his way out, of controlling the outcome, had been brutally stripped away. His powerful, expensive lawyer simply turned and walked out, leaving Julian to face the marshals alone.
