The grand hall of the Connecticut estate hummed with a different kind of terror now. The last time I saw Julian, he was standing over me, leather crop in hand. Now, he was on his knees by the ornate mahogany desk, fingers flying across the laptop keyboard.

His face, usually so composed, was slick with sweat. He jabbed at the screen, a low, guttural sound escaping his throat.

“No, no, no!” he hissed, his voice raw.

I watched from the floor, my back aching, as he fruitlessly tried to log into his Swiss credit portal. The screen glowed an ominous red. The federal asset hold had already hit, even faster than I’d anticipated.

A digital notification flashed across his browser. “$18,000,000 Margin Call: Default Initiated.”

His body seized. He tore at his hair, his eyes wide with a terror I had never seen, not even from myself in that cellar. This was a fear purely for his money.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder. The flashing blue and red lights painted pulsing streaks across the manicured lawn, visible through the drawing-room windows.

“They’re here,” I whispered, the words scratching in my throat.

He looked up, not at me, but at the window, his chest heaving. His empire, built on lies and stolen millions, was collapsing in real-time.

Local police cruisers screeched to a halt first, officers emerging with drawn weapons. But before they could even reach the grand front doors, black SUVs with federal plates surged forward, federal marshals spilling out. They moved with an authority that left no doubt who was in charge.

Julian stood frozen, watching his world crumble through the glass.

Two marshals strode into the room, their faces grim. One of them, a woman with sharp, assessing eyes, knelt beside me.

“Elena Reyes?” she asked, her voice calm and professional.

I nodded, a wave of exhaustion washing over me.

“You’re safe now. We’re getting you to Greenwich Hospital under federal protection.”

She helped me to my feet, gently supporting my bruised frame. As they led me past Julian, his eyes, dark and full of impotent rage, locked onto mine. He didn’t speak. He just watched, his knuckles white against the desk.

The silence spoke volumes.

I leaned on the marshal, my body heavy but my spirit lighter than it had been in years. The air outside was crisp, clean. The nightmare was finally over, and the consequences for Julian had just begun.
