Chapter 16: A Kitchen in Queens

The news of the blacklisted Nassau account sent Chloe Dupont into a spiral. She tossed the laptop onto her plush white rug. Six million dollars, gone. Just like that. The federal agents had raided Julian’s other accounts, but she had thought this one was untouchable.

She paced her penthouse, the soft, expensive fabric of her robe swishing against her legs. Julian was going down, and he was taking everything with him. Including her.

Chloe paused, staring at her reflection in the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. Her designer makeup was smudged, her eyes wide with fear. She wasn’t going to prison for Julian Reyes. Not for his greed, his cruelty, or his stupid “cultural submission” charade.

She picked up her phone, her fingers hovering over a contact. Not Julian. Not Thorne.

A few minutes later, she was on a secure line with Agent Jenkins. Her voice, usually so poised, was trembling.

“Agent Jenkins,” Chloe said, forcing a calm she didn’t feel. “I need to speak with a federal prosecutor. Immediately.”

“Regarding what, Ms. Dupont?” Jenkins’s voice was flat, betraying no emotion.

“Regarding Julian Reyes. And his… private ledger.” Chloe took a deep breath. “The one with all the real estate bribes. The off-the-books payments. The ones no one else knows about.”

There was a beat of silence on the other end. “And what would you be seeking in return, Ms. Dupont?”

Chloe gripped the phone tighter. “Full immunity. From any and all charges related to… the assault. And everything else.”

She waited, holding her breath. This was her play. Her one chance to save herself from the wreckage Julian had created. She knew enough to sink him entirely, and she was ready to trade it all. The phone line crackled, then Jenkins’s voice came back, crisper this time.

“Arrange a secure meeting. Bring everything you have.”

A cold smile touched Chloe’s lips. Julian had always underestimated her. He thought she was just a pretty face, easily manipulated. But she was a survivor. And she would betray anyone, even him, to stay free. The private ledger, hidden in a safety deposit box in Geneva, held the key to Julian’s true criminal depth. And she would happily hand it over.
