Chapter 16: A Kitchen in Queens

A month later, a different kind of meeting. This time, in a small, windowless office with an immigration official. The air was thick with unspoken tension.

“Ms. Reyes,” the official began, adjusting his glasses. “We have reviewed your immigration file, cross-referencing it with the federal investigation records.”

My father sat beside me, his jaw tight.

“While your cooperation in the Julian Reyes case is commendable, and you acted as a critical whistleblower, there’s a complication regarding your original visa application,” the official stated.

My heart sank. I knew what was coming.

“Due to Mr. Reyes’s intricate financial structures and the nature of his corporate fraud, there were minor corporate reporting inaccuracies in your initial spousal visa petition,” he explained. “Documents you signed, under duress, that contained false information related to his business dealings and your perceived assets.”

I remember Julian shoving papers at me, telling me to sign without reading, threatening to send me back if I didn’t comply. He’d even threatened my family back home. I’d been so afraid, so desperate to stay.

“These inaccuracies, though forced upon you, technically constitute misrepresentation on a federal immigration document,” the official continued, his voice monotone. “Under current statutes, this voids your green card application.”

My breath hitched. I knew I had signed things I didn’t understand, but Julian had assured me it was just “paperwork.” He had used my lack of English, my trust, and my desperate hope for a new life against me.

“Therefore,” the official concluded, “you must submit to voluntary departure from the United States once the trial concludes. You will be required to leave the country.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and absolute. Voluntary departure. Deportation. The price of speaking the truth, of dismantling Julian’s empire, was my own place in this country.

My father put a comforting hand on my arm. He looked at the official, his expression unreadable.

“Is there no other option?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Given my cooperation, my circumstances?”

The official shook his head, his gaze unwavering. “The law is clear, Ms. Reyes. You reported these inaccuracies yourself as part of your federal disclosures, which is commendable. But the fact remains that they were part of your original application. The process will be initiated upon the completion of the trial.”

A profound sadness washed over me. I had sacrificed everything: my safety, my dignity, my entire settlement. Now, my legal residency was gone too. Julian’s final, unintended consequence, a ghost from his past manipulations, was now my future. The luxury address and conditional visa he offered me were now both stripped away. But at least this time, it was my choice to accept the consequences, not his.
