Chapter 16: A Kitchen in Queens

Chloe Dupont stood in the departure lounge of JFK Airport, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She wore a wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses, her stylish trench coat cinched tight. In her carry-on bag, nestled beneath layers of clothes, were $2.4 million in bearer bonds. Her ticket was for a direct flight to Paris, purchased under a meticulously forged French passport.

She kept glancing at her watch. Boarding was about to begin. She was so close. So incredibly close to freedom, to a new life with Julian’s stolen millions. She could almost taste the champagne and the anonymity of the Left Bank.

“Flight BA206 to Paris now boarding at Gate 42,” the loudspeaker announced.

Chloe picked up her bag, her muscles tense. She moved towards the gate, her stride deliberately casual. Just a few more steps.

Suddenly, a voice cut through the airport din, firm and clear. “Chloe Dupont?”

Chloe froze. Her blood ran cold. She turned slowly, her hand instinctively tightening on the strap of her bag.

Agent Jenkins stood there, flanked by two other federal agents. Their expressions were calm, but their eyes were sharp, unwavering.

“We need you to come with us, Ms. Dupont,” Jenkins said.

Chloe’s mind raced. How? How had they found her? She had used cash for the passport, a burner phone, a ride-share service booked at the last minute from a secure network.

“My name isn’t Dupont,” Chloe said, her voice strained, trying to maintain the charade. “I’m… Marie Dubois.”

One of the agents stepped forward, holding up a printout. It was a screenshot of her rideshare booking, complete with the last-minute pickup and destination.

“Our sources are very reliable, Ms. Dupont,” Agent Jenkins stated, her gaze pointed. “They track even the most obscure digital breadcrumbs.”

Marcus. It had to be Marcus Lindqvist. He knew her habits, her preferences. He must have used his skills to pinpoint her escape route.

Chloe’s shoulders slumped. Her carefully constructed escape plan had crumbled. The thought of Paris, of freedom, vanished in a puff of smoke. She had been so consumed with saving herself that she hadn’t considered Julian’s analyst, silently working against them both.

She didn’t resist as the agents took her arm. As they led her away, the loudspeaker announced the final boarding call for her flight to Paris. The gate agent was closing the door. Chloe watched it, a silent, bitter curse escaping her lips. The bearer bonds, the passport, the flight—all of it was useless now.
